Do we worship Idols of our own

What is idolatry? Webster dictionary describes it as :

1: the worship of a physical object as a god

2: immoderate attachment or devotion to something

Synonyms

adulation, deification, hero worship, worship, idolization, worshipping (also worshiping)

The bible also defines what it is and guess what it is not just the worship of a god.

Ephesians 5 Amplified Bible (AMP)

5 Therefore be imitators of God [copy Him and follow His example], as well-beloved children [imitate their father].

2 And walk in love, [esteeming and delighting in one another] as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us, a [a]slain offering and sacrifice to God [for you, so that it became] a sweet fragrance.

3 But immorality (sexual vice) and all impurity [[b]of lustful, rich, wasteful living] or greediness must not even be named among you, as is fitting and proper among saints (God’s consecrated people).

4 Let there be no filthiness (obscenity, indecency) nor foolish and sinful (silly and corrupt) talk, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting or becoming; but instead voice your thankfulness [to God].

5 For be sure of this: that no person practicing sexual vice or impurity in thought or in life, or one who is covetous [who has lustful desire for the property of others and is greedy for gain]—for he [in effect] is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

16 Making the very most of the time [buying up each opportunity], because the days are evil.

17 Therefore do not be vague and thoughtless and foolish, but understandingand firmly grasping what the will of the Lord is.

18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but ever be filled andstimulated with the [Holy] Spirit.

So what the two definitions together are tellings us is that anything that is a addiction or a way of life that does not Love God and Love others as ourselves can be idolatry. Worshipping money, being rich, drinking too much, using drugs, sex even being on the internet all the time at the expense of ignoring the two comandments Jesus gave us is idolatry.

So make every effort not to let anything rule your life. Put God first as HE knows what is best for you and He loves you enough to do what is best for you. As paul says:

Ephesians 5:14b

“Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

IF you are addicted to things and can not get out of it on your own find a recovery program like AA and get help. Make every effort to do what is pleasing in Gods sight. May God shine His light on you and make your paths straight.
